Awards

The Section and the parent AFS chapter offer a variety of awards for students and established scientists

Award of Excellence in Fish Physiology

The Physiology Section of AFS solicits nominations for the Award of Excellence in Fish Physiology on a biennial basis, ahead of the International Congress on the Biology of Fish. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the science of fish physiology. The Award of Excellence is the highest award of scientific recognition presented by the AFS Physiology Section and should be reserved for people with outstanding contributions to fish physiology. Any member of the AFS Physiology Section of the American Fisheries Society may make a nomination. Nominations should include a description (less than 2 pages) of the nominee’s contributions to the field of Fish Physiology.

Previous recipients of the Excellence in Fish Physiology Award are Bill Hoar and Dave Randall (1994), Howard Bern (1996), Tatsuya Hirano (1998), Dominic Houlihan (2000), Chris Wood (2002), Dal Val (2004), Pat Walsh and Tony Farrell (2006), Joe Cech, Jr. (2008), Steve Perry (2010), Carl Schreck (2012), Steve McCormick (2014), Patricia Schulte (2016), Martin Grosell (2018), and John Steffenson (2022).

Student Writing Awards

The Parent American Fisheries Society holds an annual writing contest to recognize students who do an excellent job communicating the value of fisheries research to the general public. Undergraduate and graduate students are asked to submit a 500- to 700-word article explaining their own research, or a research project in their lab or school. The article must be written in language understandable to the general public (i.e., journalistic style). Students may write about research that has been completed, is in progress, or is in the planning stages. The papers will be judged according to their quality and their ability to turn a scientific research topic into a paper for the general public. (For examples of past winning papers, see Fisheries 26(12):30 and Fisheries 27(1):39.)

Skinner Memorial Award

The John E. Skinner Memorial Fund was established in memory of John Skinner, former Chapter and Western Division American Fisheries Society President.  The fund provides monetary travel awards for deserving graduate students or exceptional undergraduate students to attend the American Fisheries Society (AFS) annual meeting.

Any student who is active in fisheries or related aquatic disciplines is eligible to apply.  Awardees are chosen by a committee of the AFS Education Section.  Selection is based on academic qualifications, professional service, and reasons for attending the meeting.  Travel support (final amount is yet to be determined, but at least up to $600 per award) will be made available to successful applicants.  Award winners will also receive a one year paid membership to the American Fisheries Society.
