Management Plan

The staffs of Warm Springs National Fish Hatchery, AL and Private John Allen National Fish Hatchery in Tupelo, MS have assisted the Alabama Divions of Wildlife & Fishereis staff at Spanish Fort and Marion State Fish Hatchery in broodstock collection, spawning, and rearing activities during 2008 and 2009.

In 2009 Spanish Fort staff have implemented a cooperative educational program where PIT-tagged alligator gar finderlings are raised by students at Fairhope High Shcool’s Aquascience class to advanced sizes for eventual stocking in to the Mobile-Tensaw delta. This school has an excellent wet lab/greenhouse facility in Baldwin County.

Permit Requirement

Management (Proposed/ In Draft fot 2010)

At the regular monthly meeting of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission in August, 10 changes in fishing regulations were approved. These were recommendations from the AGFC’s Fisheries Division staff. The rule changes will go into effect Jan. 1, 2010. Alligator gar are fabled fish in Arkansas but have declined in numbers, but enough are still in some Arkansas rivers so that people go out specifically for them. Many bowfishing enthusiasts often have alligator gar at the top of these priorities. The new regulations will reduce the daily limit from two to one on alligator gar, set a season for taking them and create a permit for alligator gar fishing. The reduction in the daily limit and the other alligator gar rule changes came out of meetings of AGFC fisheries personnel and bowfishing organizations.
