Illinois

Alligator Gar have been reintroduced into power plant lakes and off-channel habitat of the Illinois river in the northern part of the state.
Kentucky

Murray State University investigated diet composition within Clarks River, investigating morphological differences in species of gar to educate public on Alligator Gar awareness, Partnered with Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife for reintroduction efforts in Clarks River.
Louisiana

USFWS Baton Rouge and the GCPO LCC used GIS models and telemetry data to create a Spawning Habitat Suitability Index which helps locate potential spawning areas of alligator gar. Visual observation by USFWS biologists of Alligator Gar spawning within predicted area lends utility to this model.

LSU masters student in collaboration with USFWS and GCPOLCC, investigated fish-habitat relationships and identified aquatic habitat conditions that promote healthy alligator gar populations. Objectives for this study were to: 1) identify floodplain habitat features associated with desired fish assemblage characteristics based on the role of Alligator Gar as a surrogate species; and 2) develop a sampling protocol for surveying alligator gar with side-scan sonar.
