STUDENT TRAVEL AWARDS

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION SUBMISSIONS WAS FEBRUARY 10, 2023.

TCAFS is actively fundraising with prospective donors to support student travel awards, which will provide a cash check to each recipient with funds intended to defer a portion of the travels costs associated with attendance at the 2023 TCAFS Annual Meeting. The total number of student travel awards and award amounts are contingent upon available funding. All current graduate and undergraduate students (as of the spring 2023 semester) are encouraged to apply. The deadline for applications is Friday, February 10th. Travel awards will be announced, and checks issued at the 2023 TCAFS Awards Banquet.

Click here to apply for a TCAFS Student Travel Award. Be prepared to answer the question (in 250 words or less), “How will attendance at the 2023 TCAFS Annual Meeting contribute to your professional development goals and career aspirations?”

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS CLOSED JANUARY 11, 2023.

The deadline this year is firm, and no extensions will be given. Authors will be notified of abstract acceptance by January 20, 2023.

The 2021 and 2022 meetings saw a record number of abstract submissions. In an effort to maximize the number of oral presentations that may be presented and, following the popular opinion in the 2022 TCAFS membership poll, we will be running two concurrent oral sessions. This will allow oral presentations to be expanded to 15 minutes for the talk, 3 for questions, and 2 for movement between rooms.

To submit an abstract to be considered for the technical program, please provide the following information:

Author name(s): Provide names and affiliations of each author on the paper (presenting author to be noted with an *)
Presentation type: (oral or poster … please indicate whether you are willing to present the data in the alternative format if requested)
Contact information: (affiliation, street address, city, state, zip code, telephone number, and email address)
Presentation title:
Abstract: (Single paragraph, 300-word maximum length)

In addition, please indicate your intentions for the presentation in the 2023 TCAFS Proceedings (abstract-only or manuscript) and indicate whether the presenter is a STUDENT or PROFESSIONAL. To be considered a student presenter, you must be enrolled at the time the abstract is submitted. PROFESSIONAL presenters, please indicate your willingness to judge student presentations.

Oral presentations should be prepared as a 15-minute presentation (with 3-minutes for questions) using MS PowerPoint®. With the concurrent format, we will also give you the option of requesting that your presentation be given in the same room and time block as related research. Please be prepared to provide the speaker and title of other presentations when you submit your abstract. We will do our best to accommodate such requests when possible.

Poster presentations should be formatted to include a title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion/conclusion, and literature cited. Posters must not exceed 48” in any dimension.

SPONSORS, EXHIBITORS, AND DONATIONS

ALL EXHIBITOR BOOTHS NEEDED TO BE CONFIRMED BY FEBRUARY 1, 2023.

The Texas Chapter of the American Fisheries Society (TCAFS) is a non-profit organization committed to the conservation, development, and wise utilization of recreational and commercial fisheries, the promotion of all branches of fisheries science and practice, and the exchange and dissemination of knowledge about fish, fisheries, and related subjects.

To facilitate these objectives, the meeting will consist of training workshops, the Chapter business meeting, technical committee meetings, and symposium and sessions consisting of an anticipated 50 scientific presentations. A highlight of the meeting is awarding academic scholarships to our future fisheries professionals. Directed donations and a fund-raising event, held during our annual meeting, finance these scholarships. Our primary fund-raising event is the raffle and auction held during the annual meeting. Merchandise, art work, services, vacations, and guided fishing and hunting trips donated by individuals and businesses have made this event possible over the past years. The continued growth of the student awards and scholarships program is dependent upon the success of this event.

We sincerely request that you consider contributing to our fund-raising efforts. Any item or service you donate would greatly benefit our organization as we strive to improve the quality of management of our waters and biological communities. Beyond that, this is a great opportunity for you to advertise your company’s name and products. Please note, your contributions are tax deductible (Employer Identification Number/EIN #52-1069108).

There are three ways you can help. First, if you are marketing services or products that you feel may be of interest to fisheries professionals, please consider setting up an exhibition/information booth at the trade show. Second, you can elect to sponsor the meeting. These sponsorships contribute directly to various student scholarships, student travel expenses, and student housing during the conference. Third, you can make a monetary or product donation to the meeting’s auctions and raffle.
