Good rotenone stewardship results from the prudent use of the product by taking responsibility of reducing environmental impacts.  Consistent with this, rotenone moving off-site typically in flowing streams must be deactivated.  Rapid deactivation is achieved with the addition of potassium permanganate  (KMnO₄) in liquid or solid form.  Most liquid applications of KMnO₄ use a reservoir with a metering devise to dispense a 2.5% w/v solution at a constant measurable rate.  However, in many cases, it is preferable to apply granular KMnO₄ using a metering devise like an auger.
